A promising preseason for 49ers, Raiders
Is baseball almost over? Good, because I can't wait for football.
This is going to be the most exciting NFL season in the Bay Area in many years. Actually, the real season might be ugly, but the training camps and preseason will be one thrill after another for both teams. The Raiders and 49ers will be more fun to watch in minicamps than most teams will be in the NFL "playoffs," whatever those are.
Take the quarterback situations. Please.
For both teams, this will be the fifth consecutive season of starting out with a quarterback who is not a proven, reliable, NFL-caliber ball-chucker. The 49ers opened the '03 season with Jeff Garcia and the Raiders opened with Rich Gannon, and since then it's been "Star Search."
So this season will make a combined 10 years of wandering in the wilderness. Moses' record no longer seems untouchable.
The Raiders know who their quarterback will be, but they don't know if JaMarcus Russell will be the biggest passer in the league or the biggest throw rug. With the addition of rookie phenom running back Darren McFadden, I can't wait to see what kind of crazy offense the Raiders will feature. Neither can Lane Kiffin.
The 49ers were going to stage a potentially awkward duel for the starting quarterback spot between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. Now it has turned into a potentially chaotic three-way duel, with J.T. O'Sullivan thrown into the mix. O'Sullivan will be sipping coffee with his eighth professional team, and he might be the front-runner.
What if, after all the dueling, Mike Nolan and Mad Mike Martz don't agree on which of the Three Musketeers won the 49ers' duel? Do they flip a coin, or put on the gloves and go 10 rounds?
We've got two teams that from the ownership down are as rock-solid stable as the housing market.
Eat your hearts out, fans of the other 30 NFL teams.
